Low is one of my favorite bands. They sound like a band started by Hardy Dean Stanton and Natasha Kinski’s characters from Paris, Texas.
Each song feels like a somber dialogue between a couple so fucked up, they’re beyond yelling at each other. The subtext of most songs is “hey, it was uncool of you to tie my wrists together and try to drown me.” “Yeah. Yeah. I know. I’m sorry.”
“Laser Beam” is on the album Things We Lost in the Fire. I discovered the album when I was living in England. I vividly remember listening to this particular song on one of the rainest days I was there (I went to England for three months expecting a ton of rain and a ton of bad food, and found surprisingly little rain and surprisingly good food).
I listened to the first half of the record while walking to a Mexican restaurant called Benito’s Hat. I wasn’t expecting to find great food in England period, let alone great Mexican food. Well sure enough, I still think of Benito’s Hat. One of the best burrito’s I’ve ever had!
I walked back home listening to “Laser Beam”. It’s a pretty haunting piece of music, made all the more haunting by the rain.
